## Gold in a spendable format

A Goldback is a privately issued, voluntary local currency made with a small, stated quantity of 24-karat gold sealed inside protective polymer layers. The gold is distributed through the note rather than struck into a coin. That construction allows the material to be divided into denominations intended for smaller exchanges.

Goldbacks are not United States legal tender. Participation is voluntary: buyers, sellers, and local businesses decide whether to accept them and at what mutually agreed value. The official reference price gives participants a common starting point, but an individual merchant’s price or checkout policy can differ.

## Denominations and series

Each denomination contains a proportional amount of gold. If the official price for one Goldback is $9.21, a five Goldback note has an estimated reference value of $46.05. The artwork changes by state and denomination, while the stated gold content and identifying marks remain part of the object.

The 2026 California series uses regional landscapes, civic virtues, wildlife, and landmarks. This site currently documents only the four items supplied for the California launch: the quarter, one, three Limited Early Release, and five Goldback designs.

## What to evaluate before buying

Start with the live reference price, then compare the seller’s price, shipping, availability, and return terms. Premiums can reflect distribution and retail costs. A collector may also care about condition, packaging, serial identifiers, or limited-release status.

Treat Goldbacks as a specialized physical-currency product, not as a guaranteed investment. Learn how pricing works, verify the seller, and keep records of what you paid.
